The years of wrangling between regulators, toxicologists, and lawyers over the harmonized CLP classification of titanium dioxide may have been just the beginning of a new chapter in the hazard assessment of substances. Various other substances are currently being evaluated for their (inhalation) toxicity, in which the presence of particles plays an important role. This raises many questions, some of which are fundamental in nature.
